    Thanks Howard,

As you mention, our lectionary does cause difficulties. Four gospels into three years has meant that John dominates Lent and Easter. I have discovered that we now omit the cleansing of the Temple because as you mention this comes early in John and not during the last week in Jerusalem.

But by the same token, the recent emphasis on the Great Commission of Matthew has tended to forget other Gospel’s commission which this passage in John does address. The timid disciples are empowered to go out into the world again. They are not to be a holy huddle!

You are right in the need to let each gospel speak. We struggle not to try and harmonise the accounts rather than let each gospel make its own point.

    Thanks again,
    Robert Bruere

Thanks Howard for coming back online as your comments on the Gospel readings are very helpful to me in sermon preparation. I am one of the ministers at Te Pou Herenga Waka o te Whakapono, 149 Latham Street. Marie.
