29th Sunday in Ordinary Time

This week’s Gospel Reading is Matthew’s version of the Render-to-Caesar episode. A conventional reading of Jesus’ teaching is the have separate obligations to God and society, supporting a separation of church and state. In this video I argue that Jesus teaching, especially in Matthew’s context, is something else … that all our obligations are defined by God’s righteousness, unless we are already in Caesar’s pocket, and his money in ours, in which case God may not get a look in.
